Chapter 11

Jerry waited until the door closed to let out a sigh. More and more Brad and Kevin had been getting off by themselves. Oh, they hadn’t excluded him, or done anything to make him feel less a part of the group. It was more that shared glances lingered longer, as did casual touches.

Somehow, now that they had a roof over their heads and good jobs, and weren’t so focused on mere survival, Brad and Kevin had begun developing feelings for each other above and beyond friendship. Good for them, they deserved to be happy. But would Sawyer bring their newfound joy crashing down by commanding, “Foxes over here, wolves over there”?

Would break the guys’ hearts. And Jerry’s too. The guys had always been there for him, and while he loved his cousin like a brother, Brad stood firmly in the friend zone, or more precisely, the “friends with benefits zone,” as did Dillon.

An icy blast swirled through the front door. “I’m sorry, we’re closed,” he droned on auto-pilot without looking up, swishing a broom back and forth over the floor. Probably a stray tourist stopping to ask for directions, or some drunk local who’d lost track of time and didn’t notice the bar had closed.

Spruce and pine filled his nostrils, bringing to mind a hike in the mountains.

Troy. Without looking up, he knew who stood there. Jerry’s heart thudded in his chest. Troy had come back. Dared he hope…?

“It was noisy tonight, and busy,” Troy said, voice low. “We didn’t get to talk much.” Damn! That was more words than he usually spoke in an entire evening, other than ordering food or a drink. And had his baritone always been so silky smooth, like a caress to Jerry’s favorite body parts?

“Um… well, yeah. It was the first clear weather we’ve had in a week. Folks got tired of being cooped up.” Lame! Why couldn’t he think of something better to say? Jerry never got this tongue-tied around Dillon, Kevin, or Brad.

“Oh. Well, maybe I can help you clean up.”

How unsexy was dumpster duty? “Uh, thanks, but I can manage.” No way did Jerry want the hottest man in town to watch him lugging beer cans and wine bottles.

For a moment, Troy didn’t move. Then he hunched his shoulders. “Oh. Okay. I’ll just be going then.” Never had the guy sounded so dejected. He shuffled away, studying the floor.

“Wait!” Troy’s return was a fantasy come true. Like hell would Jerry let him walk away. Give him something, anything, to keep the guy from leaving. “Maybe there is something you can help me with.”

Troy turned, one eyebrow raised, nearly touching his blue knit hat.

Jerry froze, staring into beautiful green eyes and a hopeful face. No way to tell how he knew, but he did, exactly what the man wanted right now. An image flashed into his mind—the two of them naked and entwined. He opened his hand and let the broom fall. The handle landed with a sharp Whack! on the floor.
